Keeping Your House Safe

Keeping your house safe while you’re gone should be a concern, but it shouldn’t ruin your vacation. This post will cover eight great tips that will make keeping your house safe while you’re on vacation easy and off of your mind.

Keeping your house safe during summer vacation season is in full swing and many of you going on vacation are concerned with keeping your home safe while you’re gone. While everybody normally has the “did i turn off the stove?” moment, some people spend their entire vacation worrying about the condition of their house.

1. Ask a Friend to Help Keep Your Home Safe

Keeping your house safe while you’re on vacation could make or break the whole experience. Who better to put your mind at ease than a close friend or family member! Try to have somebody stop by your house once a day or every other day. This is the absolute best way to get live updates on your home from people that you trust.

Make sure that if you have more than one person watching your house the two people know about each other. Getting a text from your brother about a car that isn’t yours parked in your driveway (which turns out to be your friends car) could be unsettling. Make sure to keep those close to you in the loop about who is watching your house.

2. Beware of Social Media – Keep Your Accounts Private

Social media posts about your vacation plans could make keeping your house safe a pain. You’d be surprised how many people get their homes broken into the day after they leave on vacation because they let everybody on Facebook and twitter know what day they were leaving.

Change your social media settings to private or view able by friends only. This will cut down on the amount of people who can view your posts and updates while you’re gone. This still might not be enough.

The best thing you can do is NOT post about your vacation online. Wait till you are safely back at home to post recaps and pictures about your experience away from home. If you want to share your vacation experience on social media, the safest way to do so is to wait until you get back home. If keeping your house safe while you’re gone is a priority to you, take this advice seriously.

3. Talk to Local Police About Keeping Your Home Safe

Here in Denver, CO try talking to local police that you will be leaving on vacation. They often have police surveillance neighborhoods and asking to  keep an eye for any suspicious activity won’t be out of the way for them.

4. Lock it all up

Make sure everything in and around the house is locked up. Make it obvious to an intruder that there are locks. For example with the garage or storage shed near the back alley, put a chain with a padlock around it clearly showing you were serious about no one opening the doors. Don’t forget the egress windows or pet doors as well.

5. You’d be surprised by this one

It’s heard that thieves love to find duplicate keys by mistake. Although keyless entry in an incredible technology, there is flaws in technology especially when it’s easy to find a mistaken duplicate. This goes for garage door openers as well. Make sure the garage door is switched off, locked and that the deadbolt in locked for the door access into the house.

6. Maintain cleanliness of your house

Higher a company to due basic yard and house maintenance when you’re not around and mow the lawn before you leave for starters! When driving around intruders look for signs of vacancy. Have a friend or relative pick up any mail that may show up at the house. Especially if you have packages coming, don’t want those stolen either!

7. Buy a new security system

Most of these were already based around the assumption you at least have a security system in place for your home to begin with! If you’ve yet to get one, it’s worth setting up the security system before leaving than regretting and wishing you would have if your house was broken into. Think of all the valuables at risk in your home.

8. Disconnect from everything on vacation

This is not just about waiting until you arrive home before you disconnect from reality. Make sure that you don’t risk it by accidentally leaving a light or the coffee maker on. Unplug all electronics that are not meant to keep running. The fridge is obviously fine and depending on the weather, only leave the heat on to avoid pipes bursting.
